The Watch Project is an effort to provide digital watches to people experiencing homelessness.
The idea began after I met a young unhoused man in his early 20s. He was living in an isolated area of a public park, in a tent. He expressed a desire to apply for jobs, and meet with social services. I offered to give him a ride, and asked if he could meet me at the front of the park at noon. When I began to leave, I noticed he was following me even though it was 10 am. When I asked him why he was going to the front of the park so early, he said he didn't want to miss me by mistake. I eventually realized he had no phone or other way of telling the time, so I let him borrow my Casio AE1200WH.
I realized that with no sense of time I would find it next to impossible to make appointments, interviews, and coordinate meetups. By distributing watches, I hope to increase individuals' sense of autonomy and make it just a little easier to take steps to improve their lives as they see fit.
